AN AMERICAN STORY: MY FAMILY AND YOURS

Written by Dr. Mamie Smith

On July 21, 2018, a book signing of An American Story: My Family and Yours will be held at Renaissance Unity, located in Warren, Michigan.  Author Dr. Mamie Smith will also speak on the topic “Self-Identification Leads to Positive Life Direction.”  This topic connects the book to what it means to discover who you are, where you are going and how you are going to get there.

The key to knowing who you are, starts with self-identification, not for your family, friend, job or anyone else, but for yourself!  Many people will try to tell you who you are, and what mold you should fit into but, build your own mold, shape your own thought patterns and follow the guidelines spelled out to you.  Doing so, allows you to develop self-respect, build solid relationships and focus on thoughts that make you feel good inside—thoughts like self-awareness, kindness, trustworthiness and honesty of self and others.

Self-identification is discovery of the “inner self.”  External forces cannot accurately define who you are, reach for higher levels of thought like faith, courage, confidence, self-esteem, persistence, patience and perseverance.

Once you have identified yourself, decide where you are going in life, make a decision!  To wander aimlessly about without a firm sense of direction will get you lost, and keep you lost.  It’s like getting in your car and driving around without a single thought in your head as to where you are going or desire to go.  You are constantly moving but, getting nowhere.  Take time to discover what you would like to achieve in life, choose from the infinite ideas and pathways to life …only you can do so.

After you have decided where you want to go, the next step is building a plan and working that plan!  You cannot decide to be a saxophonist and study courses to become a veterinarian.  It simply will not work!  Don’t get lost in the journey, you may deviate, but if you know where you want to go, you will get back on track.
