JAY-Z: ONE OF FIVE AFRICAN AMERICAN BILLIONAIRES?
Research says, rapper, songwriter and business man Jay-Z sits among six select African American billionaires: Oprah Winfrey, Robert F. Smith, David Steward, Michael Jordan and Kanye West. It’s a unique group . . . one that reveals numerous white billionaires in America, but information says there are only six African American billionaires. Where does his wealth originate? Fourteen No. 1 albums, a clothing line called Iconix, cognac brand D’Usse and a music streaming service called Tidal.
Of course, one can assume that his wealth was not accumulated without his talented and beautiful wife, Beyonce. Her career dates back to teenage years. Not only is she beautiful and talented, she has an astute mind, numerous hits as a recording artist, success as an actress and a business acumen that has produced a successful foundation, a history of civil rights activity and major contributions to charitable organizations.
ROBERT F. SMITH, CEO and FOUNDER of VISTA EQUITY PARTNERS
Vista Equity Partners is one of the best operated software companies in America. Its Founder, Robert F. Smith, received a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and joined Goldman Sachs, rising to becoming Head of Enterprise Systems Storage there. After leaving Goldman Sachs, he started his own company, Vista Equity Partners. It currently has a $50 million portfolio of cumulative capital investments. But, many people know CEO Smith for his humanitarian deeds. . . philanthropy is his name and giving is his game. His giving hand has stretched across many K-12 music education programs, provided opportunities for minorities, gave the largest donation to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture , but he was highly applauded for the grant he gave to Morehouse College that eliminated student loan debt for its entire 2019 graduating class. Wow!
MICHAEL JORDAN: BASKETBALL LEGEND TO BUSINESS TYCOON
Watching Michael Jordan “dribble and dunk” for almost two decades, most did not question his agility, skill-set and ability to maneuver the next “move,” but few believed he would be as successful in the business world as he was on the basketball court. Well…he is.
Sources place his financial worth at $2.1 billion and climbing. Several financial streams contribute to that worth: the Air Jordan Brand, ownership of the Charlotte Hornets, endorsement deals with Gatorade, Hanes and Upper Deck. He also owns seven restaurants, a car dealership and homes in Illinois, North Carolina and Utah.
Jordan has a history of making donations to charitable organizations, and will continue that practice with generated funds from the documentary, The Last Dance.
