A Touch of Freedom

“A Touch of Freedom” was written and published by Dr. Mamie Smith in 2011. She included it in a third book entitled Medicine: A Daily Dose of Spirituality. A champion for human rights as long as remembered, Smith believes human rights have their foundation in divine rights. Freedom is a fundamental right for all people because God created the “man in his image” free. Thus, making the message of A Touch of Freedom one that represents truth eternally.

A Touch of Freedom

Freedom—heard, adored, embraced, ignored,

What will it say

Yesterday, tomorrow, or even today?

Is it in your home or on your street,

Moving with each heartbeat?

Cities, suburbs, corporate towers

Does it blossom as your flower?

America, listen!

Revolution! Constitution! Bill of Rights!

Are they at the center of your fight?

Cities decay, economies melt away,

Wall Street! Main Street! World Street!

Do they thrive, do they grow—once more?

Countries at war,

Terrorism on the rise,

Rockets, bombs, missiles,

Is this wise?

Freedom is not just a word

But a feeling deep inside,

Express it! Live it! And it can be heard,

Not only in a country, but worldwide.

Feeling a Touch of Freedom

How many people around the world are experiencing everything except “a touch of freedom? Hunger, depredation, fear and a sense of helplessness fill the hearts of millions of people. Man’s humanity to man and human decency are scare or non-existent. Yet, there is hope–millions are spending money, labor and love to meet the need. Sometimes, constant bombardment with the worst of humanity, causes us to dismiss or minimize the best of humanity.

The writer expresses gratitude for your kindness, respect and love shared at home and abroad.
