ARTIST SYDNEY JAMES

SYDNEY JAMES USES WALLS TO UNITE NOT DIVIDE

Artist Sydney James decorates walls that spell unity. As I gaze at her walls around the city of Detroit, I am inspired by what they say. I hear “Women are powerful! Color unites! Unity promotes progress!”

Walls are erected to divide, separate, keep someone or something in or someone or something out or maybe . . . a combination of both. What about a wall that seeks to unite, bring people closer . . . a wall that speaks to the heart and soul of a people or nation? Sydney James, a Detroit artist, uses her talents to sound the alarm for social and cultural issues. Our nation cannot seem to successfully address: women’s rights, criminal justice, equality and human rights.

THE ARTIST

Ms. James is a graduate of the internationally-known Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. After expanding her career as a visual artist in the Los Angeles film and television industry, she decided the best place to elevate her growing desire to use art to make a difference in the world, was hometown Detroit. As one wanders about many Detroit neighborhoods, his eyes cannot miss giant buildings with designs that urge social change. If you engage her in conversation, you will understand why her art speaks with bold, deep hues, complex renderings and faces of despair. It voices the injustice she feels the world metes out to people of color and women.

WORKS OF ART THAT HYNOTIZE

THEY DISARM . . .

As you drive around the motor city (Detroit), pause a moment and see if the artistic design on the giant building you are staring at says, “Sydney G. James,” you may get the point!
