DETROIT BLACK MUSIC AWARDS
The Detroit Black Music Awards, established in 2008 by Misty Love, pays tribute to talented musicians while they are still “alive” to receive it. It honors musicians in many categories. However, the Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient of 2022 is Saxophonist Duane Parham. This article reflects on those achievements. What made Parham a candidate for such an award?
The Detroit Black Music Awards recognizes that “the Man with the Horn” plays, sings and worships with that horn. It defines much of his life. The “life list” includes artist, songwriter, producer, record label, teacher, founder of a nonprofit and author.

Duane Parham is a “fixture” in the Detroit area. His life has been about serving others: lifting them up when their hearts are broken, celebrating with them during happy moments and using his horn to “let them down easy” as they fall. He wears many hats. His artistry is simply one of them. Parham’s nonprofit touches the lives of children throughout the area.
